GSR2 regulations : A new milestone for road safety

The European Union continues to evolve to improve road user safety. The General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2), which came into force on July 7, 2024, imposes new requirements on car manufacturers and equipment suppliers to enhance the safety of new vehicles sold on the European market.

New mandatory safety equipment

GSR2 introduces innovative features that will now be standard in all new vehicles. These features are designed to prevent accidents and protect users:

1. Lane departure warning and correction: Warns the driver in the event of unintentional deviation and can correct the trajectory.

2. Automatic emergency braking (AEB): Automatically activates the brakes to avoid a collision.

3. Drowsiness alert: Analyzes the driver's behavior and prompts them to take a break if they are tired.

4. Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS): Displays tire pressure in real time.

5. Emergency braking signal: Triggers a light signal in the event of sudden braking to warn other road users.

6. Accident data recorder (black box): Records vehicle parameters before and after an impact.

7. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA): Informs the driver when they exceed the speed limit.

8. Blind spot detection (UN Regulation 151): Mandatory system on certain heavy goods vehicles (categories M2, M3, N2 > 8t, and N3) to signal the presence of road users (cyclists, pedestrians) in the blind spot on the passenger side.

9. Reverse detection (UN Regulation 158): Mandatory cameras or sensors to help detect obstacles behind the vehicle and make maneuvering safer.

Implications for Manufacturers and Equipment Suppliers

The implementation of GSR2 entails major changes in vehicle design and manufacturing:

1. Technological adaptations: Manufacturers must integrate these advanced systems while maintaining competitive costs. This requires investment in research, development, and production.

2. Opportunities and challenges for equipment manufacturers: Equipment manufacturers are being called upon to provide innovative technologies, representing an opportunity for growth but also challenges in terms of performance, compliance, and innovation.

3. Impact on weight and fuel consumption: The addition of this equipment can increase vehicle weight, affecting performance and fuel efficiency. Manufacturers will therefore need to balance safety and optimization.

The main objective of these measures is to significantly reduce accidents and save lives, a challenge shared by the entire automotive industry.

The GSR2 marks a key milestone toward safer roads in Europe. Manufacturers and equipment suppliers must integrate these new technologies while balancing regulatory requirements and user expectations. This transition, built on industry collaboration, paves the way for a new era of innovation and road safety.
